Apple is reportedly working on advanced versions of the AirPods and Apple Watch, both of which will feature built-in cameras, with a potential release around 2027.
The company is developing two new chips for these devices: “Nevis” for the Apple Watch and “Glennie” for the AirPods. The goal is to have these chips ready by 2027, with the possibility of launching the devices in the same year if production timelines align.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected Apple analyst, previously revealed that Apple intends to integrate infrared cameras into AirPods, aiming to enhance spatial audio experiences, especially when paired with the Vision Pro and other future Apple devices. These cameras could also enable in-air gesture control by recognizing hand movements. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman further suggested that Apple might use these cameras to feed data into AI systems.
In terms of the Apple Watch, future models could include a camera built into the screen area, while the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra may feature a camera near the Digital Crown. These cameras are expected to enhance the device’s “Visual Intelligence” capabilities, providing users with real-time information about their surroundings and more personalized directions.
However, it’s important to note that the cameras in both the AirPods and Apple Watch will likely not be used for traditional functions like taking photos or making FaceTime calls. Instead, they will primarily serve to provide visual data for on-device AI features, enriching user interaction with the devices.
