Alex Ovechkin has officially rewritten NHL history, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record for most career goals. The Washington Capitals star scored his 895th career goal near the end of the regular season, capping off a legendary journey that many once doubted he could complete.
Ovechkin’s career has long been intertwined with that of Sidney Crosby, his counterpart in one of hockey’s most iconic rivalries. Yet, even with two decades of fierce competition between their teams, Crosby and longtime teammate Evgeni Malkin set rivalry aside to honor Ovechkin’s achievement.
In a video shared by Ovechkin on Wednesday, the Penguins stars surprised him with an elegant tribute: a luxury Rolex watch, delivered inside an ornate presentation box. The gift was a symbol of respect and admiration from two players who have battled Ovechkin on countless occasions—but never lost sight of his place in the game’s history.
Malkin, now in his 19th NHL season, has shared the league with Ovechkin for nearly his entire career, adding emotional weight to the moment.
Capitals Turn to the Future, With Ovechkin’s Role Still Central
Following a second-round playoff exit against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Capitals are looking ahead. While Ovechkin remains a major contributor—even in his 40s—the team is focused on building a younger, faster roster around him.
“We had some big holes to fill last year,” said Capitals President Brian MacLellan. “This year, there are fewer gaps. We’ve seen progress in our younger players. Some are ready to take that next step, so we need to leave room for them—and maybe add a piece or two.”
Ovechkin has not yet announced whether he will return for a 21st NHL season. However, MacLellan expressed confidence in the star’s outlook.
“I think he had a fun year. He really enjoyed himself,” MacLellan said. “The team had a lot of fun together and was successful. I think he’ll come back, and we’ll see where it goes from there. Hopefully, he has another good year.”
While the team remains open to his return, its long-term vision includes preparing for life after Ovechkin—developing young talent that can contribute alongside him now and help carry the franchise forward when the day finally comes for him to step away.
