Atari has unveiled a new smartwatch that leans into nostalgia rather than cutting-edge functionality. The Atari 2600 My Play Watch lets users customize its interface with artwork and sound effects inspired by the iconic Atari 2600 console. But its biggest selling point is the ability to play classic games like Centipede, Pong, Super Breakout, and Missile Command—either via touchscreen or by using the watch’s crown dial as a paddle controller.
Priced at $79.99, the watch is aimed at retro gaming enthusiasts rather than tech-savvy consumers looking for advanced smartwatch features. It functions primarily as a fitness tracker, offering step counting, calorie tracking, and heart rate monitoring. However, it lacks Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, meaning users won’t receive smartphone notifications or be able to download additional apps or games.
A Familiar Design With Some Upgrades
The Atari 2600 My Play Watch is based on last year’s Space Invaders My Play Watch, which launched via Kickstarter. While the core functionality remains the same, the new model includes a slightly larger 2.02-inch touchscreen (up from 1.86 inches), a more rugged metal case, and an additional button beneath the crown dial. It also comes with three interchangeable retro-themed bands, though Atari notes these will only be available for a limited time.
Preorders are now open through Atari’s online store, with shipments expected to begin by June 10, 2025. For fans of vintage gaming, the watch offers a playful throwback—but those expecting modern smartwatch capabilities may want to look elsewhere.
