The Garmin Instinct series has long been the go-to choice for outdoor enthusiasts who demand durability and reliability. As an avid fly fisherman and camper, I’ve relied on the Instinct 2X Solar for years, thanks to its unbeatable battery life and essential features. But with the recent launch of the Instinct 3 series—now offering both a traditional memory-in-pixel (MIP) display and a vibrant AMOLED option—I put the solar-powered MIP model to the test to see how it compares.
While AMOLED displays have their appeal, I question whether they belong in the Instinct lineup. Instead, I’d have preferred Garmin to enhance the MIP display with color, similar to the impressive Enduro 3. The company has already proven that color MIP screens can coexist with long battery life—an upgrade that would have felt more at home in this rugged series.
Key Upgrades Over the Instinct 2X Solar
Beyond the display debate, the Instinct 3 Solar brings several notable improvements. Solar charging efficiency has increased dramatically—up to five times that of its predecessor. The contrast is sharper, especially noticeable when comparing both watches side by side. New color options and software enhancements, including training load analysis, sleep coaching, nap detection, Garmin Messenger, and multi-sport auto-transition, further elevate the experience.
Performance and Durability Put to the Test
In real-world use, the Instinct 3 Solar delivers accurate GPS tracking, reliable heart rate monitoring, and flawless performance in demanding conditions. The built-in LED flashlight remains a standout feature—one I use daily—and the rugged design, complete with a reinforced polymer frame and 10 ATM water resistance, ensures it can handle any adventure.
The 50mm model, particularly in the striking Twilight and Solstice orange band, fits comfortably and looks sharp on the wrist. The small secondary display in the upper right corner is a handy addition, especially for marking catches while fishing.
The Verdict: A Strong Contender With One Caveat
Priced under $500, the Instinct 3 Solar is one of the best long-lasting GPS sports watches available. However, its monochrome MIP display feels outdated in an era where even subtle color coding enhances usability for health metrics. For the next iteration, I’d love to see Garmin offer both color MIP and AMOLED options, mirroring the choice available in the Fenix 8 series. Until then, this remains a solid—if not perfect—upgrade for outdoor adventurers.
