Phillips is poised to present a historically significant Rolex Cosmograph “Big Red” Daytona Reference 6265 in its upcoming New York Watch Auction: XII. This exceptional timepiece carries a remarkable legacy, having belonged to French Formula One champion Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Renault awarded the watch to Jabouille following his groundbreaking victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix — a landmark moment marking Renault’s first-ever F1 win and the inaugural triumph for a French car and racing team.
Adding to its sentimental and historical weight, the watch’s caseback is engraved with the dedication: “DIE TO DRIVE – RENAULT F1 – J.P.J. 79,” symbolizing Jabouille’s pioneering spirit and enduring contribution to motorsport.
Originally launched in 1969 and produced until 1987, the Rolex Daytona Ref. 6265 succeeded the original Oyster Cosmograph model. This reference is distinguished by its screw-down pushers, which improved water resistance and allowed it to bear the “Oyster” designation on the dial. Jabouille’s particular watch features a 1972 case and retains its original millerighe mark I pushers—a rare characteristic among vintage Daytonas. When gifted by Renault in 1979, it likely housed a “new old stock” Big Red dial, consistent with that period, further boosting its authenticity and collector appeal.
Having remained within the Jabouille family collection for nearly 50 years, the timepiece will now be offered at auction with an estimated value between $50,000 and $100,000. Phillips’ New York Watch Auction: XII is scheduled for June 7-8, 2025, at the auction house’s Midtown Manhattan venue. Collectors and enthusiasts can view the full auction catalog on Phillips’ official website.
