At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, filmmaker and fashion icon Karan Johar made a striking statement by wearing the latest Omega Speedmaster 38mm chronograph during the premiere of Homebound, his production venture directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and starring Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor. The film was featured in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival.
Known primarily as a sports watch, the Omega Speedmaster has recently evolved to embrace a more luxurious aesthetic, a transformation perfectly exemplified by Johar’s choice. He paired the sophisticated timepiece with an elegant ivory bandhgala designed by Manish Malhotra, blending tradition with modern luxury.
Johar’s watch is a diamond-encrusted version of the Speedmaster 38mm, boasting a stainless steel case and bracelet. The bezel is adorned with 52 diamonds, while the distinctive olive-green dial features white subdials bordered with exclusive diamonds. Adding to the watch’s refined details is a single diamond set into the polished crown.
Omega’s Speedmaster 38mm collection offers multiple variations: two models crafted in 18K Sedna Gold with a rich chocolate brown PVD dial and contrasting horizontal silver subdials, and another two in 18K Moonshine Gold featuring a green PVD dial with a similar subdial design. Four stainless steel models complete the lineup, each available with either dial color and paired with either an alligator leather strap or a metal bracelet for a customizable, elegant look.
A hallmark of the 38mm series is its screw-in caseback, stamped with a seahorse medallion. Beneath lies the Omega Caliber 3300 movement, providing a 52-hour power reserve. The green PVD dial stands out with horizontally aligned oval subdials finished in silvery tones, a vertically oriented oval date window at 6 o’clock, and diamond-polished, rhodium-plated hour and minute hands filled with white Super-LumiNova, which emits a green glow in low light conditions.
This appearance at Cannes not only highlighted Johar’s sartorial flair but also underscored Omega’s seamless blend of precision engineering and high-end design.
