Since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first stepped onto the Moon wearing Omega Speedmasters in 1969, the collection has been synonymous with space exploration. Now, Omega is reinforcing that heritage with a striking new Speedmaster model that integrates meteorites in multiple forms.
A Celestial Dial with Cosmic Origins
The 43mm stainless steel case houses a dial crafted from iron meteorite, each displaying a one-of-a-kind Widmanstätten pattern—a natural crystalline structure formed over millions of years as metallic asteroids cooled slowly in space. Omega offers two versions of this celestial dial: one with a bold black PVD coating and another with an elegant galvanic grey finish.
At the 6 o’clock position, a moonphase display showcases two cabochon moons made from lunar meteorites. These rotate to depict the current lunar phase as seen from both Earth’s hemispheres. The starry backdrop replicates the night sky over Omega’s headquarters in Bienne, Switzerland, on the day Apollo 11 reached the Moon.
Precision Engineering with Space-Grade Mechanics
Powering the watch is the manual-winding Caliber 9918 chronograph movement, visible through the sapphire caseback. The three-quarter plate features intricate Geneva waves in arabesque, reminiscent of the Caliber 9908 used in Omega’s Chronoscope Master series. Beyond the moonphase addition, the movement retains signature elements like the column wheel mechanism and Co-Axial escapement.
Certified by METAS, the movement withstands magnetic fields up to 15,000 Gauss, aided by an advanced silicon balance spring. Twin barrels mounted in series ensure stable power delivery, while subdials at 9 and 3 o’clock display small seconds, date, and a combined 12-hour/60-minute recorder.
Omega’s History with Extraterrestrial Materials
This isn’t Omega’s first foray into meteorite watches. Last year, the brand introduced 20 Constellation models with dials made from the Muonionalusta meteorite, available in vivid hues like blue, green, and gold. Earlier, the Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon “Meteorite” featured a Gibeon meteorite dial in a sleek ceramic case.
In 2019, the Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition incorporated a lunar meteorite fragment in its exhibition caseback, symbolizing humanity’s lunar connection. With this latest release, Omega continues to blend horological innovation with the mysteries of the cosmos.
