A celebrated storyteller, Rolex testimonee, and participant in the brand’s latest campaign, ”Reach for The Crown,” Mittermeier embodies Rolex’s pursuit of excellence. She is also a key partner in the Perpetual Planet Initiative, working to expand marine protections—currently covering just 8% of the world’s oceans. With over 100 nations pledging to protect 30% by 2030, her advocacy is more crucial than ever.
Born in Cuernavaca, Mexico, far from the coast, Mittermeier nevertheless dedicated her life to the seas. “Photography is a universal language,” she says. “Its power lies in inspiring action.”
A Lifetime of Exploration and Advocacy
A trailblazer in conservation, Mittermeier has traveled to over 130 countries, documenting Earth’s most fragile ecosystems. Her work has graced National Geographic, earning her the title of Adventurer of the Year in 2018.
In 2005, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers, creating a platform for visual storytellers focused on environmental issues. With Rolex’s support, she and her partner, Paul Nicklen, co-founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit uniting filmmakers and photographers in marine advocacy. Their expeditions have documented 765+ species and produced 7 million+ images.
