Apple has officially discontinued its efforts to develop an Apple Watch featuring a built-in camera, a project reportedly intended for both the standard model and the rugged Apple Watch Ultra. Initially aimed for a potential release around 2027, the company ended the development last week.
Unlike conventional camera uses such as photography or video calls, Apple’s concept was designed to enhance environmental awareness and augmented intelligence. The embedded camera would have enabled users to scan real-world objects for contextual information—akin to the iPhone’s Visual Look Up feature. Possible applications included identifying plants, translating foreign languages, describing items, and displaying business hours when pointed at storefronts.
This camera integration was part of Apple’s broader strategy to infuse its wearable devices with advanced AI-powered features. However, the company has chosen to halt this initiative indefinitely, though the exact reasons remain undisclosed. While Apple is known for shelving projects only to revive them later, sources suggest the camera-equipped Apple Watch is off the table for now.

The company is reportedly developing future AirPods equipped with infrared cameras, intended to support sophisticated spatial audio, in-air gesture controls, and enhanced AI capabilities. Gurman’s report also highlights progress on Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone. After years of speculation, Apple is on track to launch its first foldable smartphone by late 2026. Contrary to earlier rumors favoring a clamshell design, the latest reports indicate a book-style foldable device featuring an external display for quick interactions and a larger internal screen comparable in size to an iPad mini when unfolded.
The foldable iPhone is expected to boast premium components, including a crease-free ultra-thin glass display, a high-end liquid metal hinge for durability, and a chassis combining titanium and stainless steel. Additional features may include dual-lens rear cameras, a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, and under-display front-facing cameras.
Ahead of the foldable launch, the anticipated iPhone 17 Air—expected to debut later this year—appears to set the design foundation. This model is rumored to be around 5.5 mm thick, with the foldable phone’s screen projected to be even thinner at 4.5 mm when open.
