While much of the tech world anticipates major changes for the iPhone 17, rumors about the Apple Watch have remained scarce—until now. A new report suggests Apple may be developing a groundbreaking all-glass Apple Watch, marking a significant departure from its current aluminum and titanium designs.
According to a post by Weibo user Instant Digital, later cited by MacRumors, Apple is experimenting with a “glass frame” that could enable touch-sensitive interactions across the entire device. If true, this would be the first time Apple has moved away from traditional metal enclosures for its smartwatch lineup.
A Bold Departure from Traditional Materials
Apple has a history of testing unconventional materials for the Apple Watch, including ceramic and even solid gold in earlier models. However, an all-glass design would represent a fundamental shift in both aesthetics and functionality. While the overall shape of the watch might remain familiar, a seamless glass enclosure could eliminate visible distinctions between the display, sensors, and buttons—creating a sleek, unified appearance.
Glass Technology: A Long-Term Vision
Apple’s interest in glass-based devices isn’t new. The company has explored the concept for decades, with recent examples including touch-sensitive controls on the AirPods 4. However, the Apple Watch has retained physical buttons since its 2015 debut, such as the Digital Crown and side button, with the Ultra model adding a customizable Action button.
Series X Rumors vs. Reality
Last year, speculation swirled about a potential “Apple Watch Series X” to commemorate the device’s 10th anniversary. Instead, Apple released the Series 10, which delivered only minor upgrades. If this glass-frame rumor gains traction, it could signal that Apple is saving its most ambitious redesign for a future model—possibly aligning with a major milestone or technological breakthrough.
As of now, details remain sparse, and Apple has not commented on the speculation. But if the company moves forward with an all-glass Apple Watch, it could redefine the boundaries of wearable design.
