Rolex has released its first-ever official book on the Submariner, offering an unprecedented look into the history of one of the world’s most iconic timepieces. Titled Oyster Perpetual Submariner—The Watch That Unlocked the Deep, the 252-page monograph traces the evolution of the legendary dive watch from its 1953 debut to today.
Developed in collaboration with Wallpaper and authored by renowned historian Nicholas Foulkes, the book provides exclusive access to Rolex’s closely guarded archives. Foulkes, a respected authority on luxury and horology, delves into the Submariner’s origins as a rugged tool watch before its transformation into a coveted luxury item.
The book highlights key milestones, including the introduction of the first 100-meter water-resistant model in 1954 and the addition of a date complication in 1969. It also explores Rolex’s other groundbreaking dive watches, such as the Sea-Dweller, Deepsea, and the record-breaking Deepsea Challenge, capable of descending 11,000 meters.
Foulkes described the project as a “privilege,” noting that the Submariner’s story is intertwined with modern horological history. The hardcover edition will be available for pre-order on Amazon starting October 1, priced at $125. A silk-bound first edition will be offered exclusively through WallpaperSTORE.
This marks the beginning of a new series of authorized Rolex publications, with more model histories expected in the coming years. Collectors and enthusiasts can anticipate further deep dives into the brand’s most celebrated timepieces.
