Garmin smartwatch users across the globe continue to experience a persistent crashing and rebooting loop, traced to a corrupted satellite file that disrupts GPS functionality. The issue, first reported on 28 January, affects multiple models during GPS lock-on attempts.
Garmin has acknowledged the problem and released an official fix, stating: “We have resolved the underlying issue causing some devices to be stuck on the startup screen or a blue triangle.” However, as of 30 January, some users still report unresolved problems. Below is a breakdown of the issue and the recommended fixes for affected models.
Understanding the Problem: The Rogue CPE File
The root cause has been identified as a faulty CPE (Clock and Ephemeris) file, which assists in faster GPS acquisition. Garmin has since removed the corrupted file and replaced it with a stable version. The challenge now lies in ensuring affected watches fetch the updated file.
Step-by-Step Fixes for Affected Garmin Models
Soft Reboot Required (Fenix 8, Lily 2)
For these models, a simple soft reboot should resolve the issue:
- Hold the Power/Light button until the watch shuts down (may take up to 15 seconds).
- Press the Power/Light button again to restart the device.
Hard Reset Required (Approach S70, Vivoactive 4/5, Venu 3, Forerunner Series)
A hard reset is more invasive but often effective. Note that this will erase downloaded apps, custom settings, and unsynced activity data.
- Power off the watch by holding the Power button.
- Hold the Start/Stop and Back buttons while turning the device back on.
- Release Start/Stop after the first beep, then release Back after the second beep.
- Re-pair the watch via Garmin Connect.
Garmin Express Sync or Manual File Deletion (Fenix 7, Epix Gen 2, Tactix 7, Others)
For outdoor and premium models, syncing via Garmin Express is recommended:
- Connect the watch to a computer via USB while holding the Start/Stop button.
- Open Garmin Express and follow prompts to sync.
- If syncing fails, manually delete the corrupted files: Windows: Navigate to the Garmin drive > RemoteSW folder and delete contents. Mac: Use OpenMTP to locate and clear the RemoteSW folder.
Can You Still Track Indoor Activities?
Some users confirm that non-GPS activities (e.g., treadmill runs, indoor cycling) remain functional if selected before a reboot loop begins. Disabling GPS services may also help avoid triggering the bug.
Garmin advises that unaffected devices likely already fetched the corrected CPE file. Users still facing issues should follow the prescribed fixes based on their specific model.
