Marking the start of its 270th-anniversary celebrations, Vacheron Constantin has unveiled a stainless-steel version of the Historiques 222, delighting collectors and enthusiasts of the legendary timepiece.
Originally reintroduced three years ago in yellow gold, the Historiques 222 pays homage to the brand’s first integrated bracelet sports watch from 1977. The revival caused a sensation, as it was the first time the design had reappeared since production ended in 1984—paving the way for the Overseas collection. Now, the highly anticipated stainless-steel edition has arrived, staying true to the original while incorporating subtle modern refinements.
A Faithful Yet Refined Revival
Like its gold predecessor, the steel Historiques 222 features thoughtful updates, including a more comfortable bracelet and a repositioned date window that no longer interrupts the minute track. Powering the watch is the in-house automatic Calibre 2455/2, bearing the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva. The movement operates at 4Hz and offers a 40-hour power reserve, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback.
The original 222 emerged during the 1970s, an era defined by luxury sports watches that balanced elegance with robustness. While Gerald Genta’s designs—such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus—dominated the decade, Vacheron Constantin turned to designer Jorg Hysek, the creative force behind the Breguet Marine and TAG Heuer Kirium, among others.
A Tribute to Timeless Design
Named in honor of Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary, Hysek’s design featured a scalloped bezel, baton hour markers, and a bracelet with distinctive hexagonal center links that tapered toward the clasp. A Maltese cross emblem at 5 o’clock completed the look. The re-edition faithfully preserves these elements, including the original 37mm “jumbo” case dimensions and a matte blue dial.
Only 500 original 222 models were produced in stainless steel, two-tone, and yellow gold, making the new non-limited release particularly significant. However, this is just the beginning of Vacheron Constantin’s 270th-anniversary celebrations. Past milestones have seen extraordinary creations, such as the 2005 L’Esprit des Cabinotiers—a secret clock hidden within an engraved pink gold orb—and the 2015 Les Cabinotiers Ref. 57260, a pocket watch with 57 complications, including the world’s first Hebraic perpetual calendar.
A Legacy of Innovation and Craftsmanship
“These anniversaries reflect our philosophy of blending mechanical innovation with artisanal craftsmanship and timeless elegance,” said Christian Selmoni, Vacheron Constantin’s style and heritage director. “This year’s celebrations will bring new horological surprises, each worthy of standing alongside our most iconic creations.” With more announcements expected throughout the year, watch enthusiasts eagerly await what Vacheron Constantin has in store next.
