Garmin has rolled out a significant software update across several of its popular smartwatch models, introducing a suite of new features aimed at enhancing user experience. While the majority of these additions are available at no cost, select premium tools will require a Garmin Connect+ subscription, priced at $6.99 per month.
Eligible Smartwatch Models
The update is being deployed to a wide range of Garmin devices, including the Fenix 8, Forerunner series, Instinct 3, Lily 2 Active, and Venu 3. Garmin has assured users that even if their device isn’t explicitly mentioned, it may still be eligible for the update.
Free Features Rolling Out
Five new features are now available to all users without charge:
Breathing Changes Monitoring: Utilizing Pulse Ox2 technology, this feature tracks nighttime breathing patterns to provide deeper insights into respiratory health.
Backpack Activity: Fitness users can now manually log backpack weight, allowing for more accurate data on pace, heart rate, and calories burned during workouts.
Backpack Weight Adjustment: This complements the Backpack Activity feature by helping maintain VO2 max accuracy during loaded activities like hiking or running.
Passcode Protection: A new security layer has been added with a passcode option. The feature includes wrist detection, automatically unlocking the device when worn.
Stage Timer: Tailored for competitive shooters, this tool offers time cues through either paired hearing protection or the watch’s built-in speaker.
Premium Features for Outdoor Enthusiasts
In addition to the free enhancements, Garmin has introduced two premium features designed with outdoor adventurers in mind.
Trails Explorer: This feature enables users to search and filter local trails by factors such as terrain, difficulty, and pet-friendliness. Community reviews and trail ratings provide valuable insights for planning hikes or runs.
Advanced Golf Tools: With a Garmin Golf Membership, users—particularly those with the Venu 3—gain access to high-end golf features. These include detailed CourseView maps, PlaysLike distance measurements, and touch tracking capabilities. A 30-day free trial is available, after which users can subscribe monthly or annually.
Getting the Update
To ensure access to all the new capabilities, users are encouraged to enable automatic updates on their devices and sync regularly via Garmin Connect.
While the inclusion of paywalled features may be met with mixed reactions, Garmin’s robust offering of free tools ensures most users will find significant value in this latest update.
