The National Hockey League (NHL) is integrating Apple Watches into its officiating workflow, equipping referees with a custom app designed to improve in-game efficiency. The collaboration, reported by The Verge, aims to reduce distractions by delivering critical updates directly to officials’ wrists.
App Syncs with NHL’s Oasis System for Real-Time Alerts
The NHL Watch Comms app connects to the league’s Oasis platform, enabling referees to monitor the game clock and receive notifications for key events—such as penalties or period transitions—without glancing at video boards. Haptic feedback provides discreet alerts through distinct vibration patterns, eliminating the need for screen checks.
Officials will use league-issued Apple Watches, choosing between the Apple Watch Ultra or Series 10. The technology builds on the NHL’s adoption of Apple products, including iPads and Macs for coaching analytics since 2017.
Apple Expands Sports Tech Partnerships
This marks Apple’s latest venture into professional sports. In 2023, the World Surf League adopted the Apple Watch to provide surfers with live scores and heat updates. The NHL’s move underscores wearable tech’s growing role in enhancing officiating precision across leagues.
