Apple is reportedly reimagining the Apple Watch as an AI-driven wearable equipped with a camera, according to industry insiders. The move aligns with the company’s broader push into artificial intelligence, following the introduction of Apple Intelligence across its iPhone and Mac lineups.
Unlike traditional devices that require active user engagement—such as opening a laptop or pulling out a smartphone—AI assistants are expected to thrive as seamless, always-accessible technologies. While smart speakers offer some level of passive interaction, their lack of portability has led to the rise of dedicated AI wearables. However, early attempts like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit r1 have struggled to gain traction, leaving the market open for a more refined solution.
Why the Apple Watch Could Succeed
Industry analyst Mark Gurman suggests in his Power On newsletter that Apple sees the Watch as an ideal platform for AI integration. Unlike standalone AI devices, the Apple Watch is already deeply embedded in users’ daily lives, syncing with messages, calendars, and other ecosystem features. Its always-on wrist presence provides the frictionless accessibility that AI assistants require.
Yet, two key limitations currently hinder the Watch’s potential: the absence of a camera—critical for visual and location-based AI queries—and the lack of Apple Intelligence-powered Siri enhancements.
Addressing the Missing Pieces
While Apple has yet to confirm when Siri will receive its long-awaited intelligence boost, Gurman reports that the company is actively developing new Apple Watch models with built-in cameras. This upgrade would enable the device to interpret its surroundings and deliver AI-generated insights in real time.
If successful, the enhanced Apple Watch could fill the gap left by underwhelming AI wearables, offering a more practical and integrated alternative. With Apple Intelligence expected to expand to watchOS in the coming years, the smartwatch may soon become a central hub for AI-driven assistance.
