Christie’s is set to host its prestigious “Important Watches Featuring Stories in Time: A Collection of Exceptional Watches” auction in New York on June 9, showcasing a blend of vintage masterpieces and contemporary horological innovations. The highlight of the event is the legendary Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater, a watch initially introduced in 1989 and once hailed as the world’s most complicated wristwatch.
With an estimated value ranging between 1.4 million, this rare timepiece was created to commemorate Patek Philippe’s 150th anniversary. Only 20 examples were crafted in pink gold, making the auctioned piece—featuring a striking slate-gray dial and Breguet numerals—an extraordinary rarity. Production ceased in 2000, cementing its status as one of the most sought-after minute repeaters of the past three decades.
A Celebration of Horological Mastery
Rebecca Ross, Head of Sale at Christie’s New York, emphasized the historical significance of the collection: “These timepieces transcend mere beauty—they represent pivotal moments in horology, from groundbreaking technical achievements to enduring design excellence. Collectors aren’t just acquiring watches; they’re securing pieces of innovation that continue to inspire.”
The auction also features other notable lots, including the Rolex ‘Rainbow Daytona’, estimated at 450,000, and an Audemars Piguet 18-karat gold Calendar Wristwatch with Moon Phases, valued between 100,000.
As Christie’s prepares for the sale, watch enthusiasts and collectors worldwide await the opportunity to own a piece of horological history.
