Apple Watch’s upcoming watchOS 26 update is expected to introduce a major change: third-party apps may soon integrate widgets into the Control Center for the first time. This shift would allow users to display quick-access actions or data from non-Apple apps alongside native features like Wi-Fi, battery status, and Focus modes.
Currently, pressing the side button on an Apple Watch opens a Control Center limited to Apple’s built-in functions, such as toggling airplane mode, locating an iPhone, or enabling Do Not Disturb. Reports suggest watchOS 26 will mirror iOS 18’s approach by opening shortcuts to third-party apps, significantly enhancing convenience.
Expanded Functionality for Fitness, Music, and Health Apps
Sources indicate that fitness trackers, music streaming services like Spotify, and health apps could gain direct Control Center access. Users might start workouts, log hydration, or launch meditation sessions with a single tap—without navigating full apps.
Customization is also set to improve: the Control Center layout will reportedly be editable via the iPhone Watch app, similar to iOS 18’s revamped design. This would simplify adding, removing, or rearranging widgets compared to the current on-watch method.
A Long-Awaited Update
Analysts note this marks one of the most significant functional upgrades to watchOS in years, unlocking possibilities akin to Apple Watch’s “complications” feature. Potential uses include smart home controls, one-touch meal logging, or default workout shortcuts.
watchOS 26 is likely to debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, with a final release expected this fall alongside new Apple Watch hardware. However, sources caution that the feature could be delayed or adjusted before launch.
