Atari has launched a striking limited-edition watch collection honoring the 45th anniversary of Asteroids, blending nostalgia with innovative design. The timepiece replaces traditional hour and minute hands with orbiting UFOs—a playful nod to the 1979 arcade classic where players earned points by shooting down passing spacecraft.
Developed in partnership with Swiss watchmaker Nubeo, the Asteroids collection features five distinct styles, each named after cosmic phenomena: Nebula Blue, Plasma Pumpkin, Supernova Red, Nova Nightfall, and Celestial Citrine. The watches boast varying band and dial color schemes, with only 125 units produced per design.
A Mechanical Tribute to Arcade History
Powered by a Japanese automatic movement, the watch employs three rotating discs to mimic the game’s mechanics. A small central disc displays the iconic triangular spaceship as the second hand, while two larger discs—moving at different speeds—simulate drifting asteroids and the UFO “hands” that indicate hours and minutes.
Premium Materials and Functional Design
The watch face glows in the dark thanks to Swiss Super-LumiNova pigments, protected under a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and stainless steel casing. With a 21 ATM water resistance rating and a screw-down crown, the timepiece is suitable for recreational diving. Each watch ships in a protective case inspired by the design of Atari’s 1977 Video Computer System (VCS).
