Apple has officially announced watchOS 26, its next major software update for the Apple Watch, set to debut alongside the upcoming Series 11 smartwatch. The update is currently available for beta testers, with a public release expected in September, consistent with Apple’s annual rollout schedule.
Wide Device Compatibility
Unlike previous updates that phased out older models, watchOS 26 maintains support for all Apple Watches currently running watchOS 11. This includes devices as far back as the Series 6, released in 2020. Last year’s watchOS 11 discontinued support for the Series 5, following a pattern seen in prior updates—watchOS 10 dropped the Series 4, while watchOS 9 ended updates for the aging Series 3.
Apple Intelligence Comes to the Watch
A key highlight of watchOS 26 is the introduction of Apple’s AI suite, previously exclusive to iPhone and Mac via iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The AI features will leverage the iPhone’s processing power for faster performance, marking the first time these capabilities extend to the wrist. Additionally, the update incorporates the sleek, glass-inspired redesign from iOS 26, offering a refreshed visual experience.
Naming Convention Shift
Apple has standardized its software naming to reflect the year ahead—watchOS 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 replace the previous sequential numbering. This change aims to simplify version tracking, meaning what users might have expected as “watchOS 12” is now part of the new naming structure.
The public release is anticipated this fall, aligning with Apple’s traditional timeline. While the AI integration promises enhanced functionality, its impact on user experience remains to be seen.
