Xiaomi has overtaken Apple as the world’s leading wearable band vendor in the first quarter of 2025, according to a new report from market research firm Canalys. The Chinese tech giant secured a 19% market share, shipping 8.7 million units—a 44% increase compared to the same period last year.
Xiaomi’s success was driven by its budget-friendly Mi Band lineup, which has remained popular since its debut in 2014 at just $14. While not a full-fledged smartwatch, the Mi Band offers sufficient functionality at an accessible price point, making it a favorite among cost-conscious consumers.
Apple Slips to Second Place as Growth Slows
Apple, previously the market leader, dropped to second place with 7.6 million shipments—a modest 5% year-over-year increase. The tech giant captured a 16% market share, as demand for the Apple Watch showed slower growth compared to competitors.
Huawei followed closely behind, securing third place with 7.1 million shipments—a 36% jump from last year—and a 15% market share. Samsung, meanwhile, posted the strongest growth, with shipments soaring 74% to 4.9 million units. The South Korean company leveraged its premium smartwatches in developed markets and more affordable wearables in emerging economies, earning an 11% market share.
Garmin rounded out the top five, shipping 1.8 million units—a 10% increase—and holding a 4% market share.
Market Expands as Basic Bands and Watches Lead Growth
Global wearable band shipments reached 46.6 million units in Q1 2025, marking a 13% increase year-over-year. Growth was observed across all categories, including basic bands, basic watches, and smartwatches, with basic bands and watches leading the expansion.
Price and Battery Life Top Consumer Priorities
The Canalys report also highlighted key factors influencing smartwatch purchases. Price emerged as the most critical consideration, followed by battery life. Health-tracking features ranked third, while brand reputation and design placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Xiaomi’s resurgence underscores the growing demand for affordable wearables, while Apple faces pressure to reinvigorate its market position amid intensifying competition.
