Apple’s upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3 will introduce satellite messaging, allowing users to send texts without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The feature, which first debuted on the iPhone 14 in 2022, will now extend to the Apple Watch, enabling users to leave their iPhones at home while staying connected.
Expanded Satellite Capabilities and Health Tracking
The Ultra 3 is expected to build on Apple’s existing satellite technology, which was previously limited to emergency SOS and roadside assistance. Last year, Apple introduced iMessage support via satellite, and the Ultra 3 will reportedly bring this functionality to the wrist.
Additionally, the watch may include blood pressure monitoring, though this feature has faced delays in the past. Rather than providing exact readings, it would alert users to potential hypertension. A non-invasive blood glucose tracker is also in development but is unlikely to launch next year.
Apple’s Push to Revitalize Smartwatch Sales
The new features appear to be part of Apple’s strategy to reinvigorate its wearables division, which has seen declining revenue over the past two years. With fewer compelling reasons for users to upgrade, Apple is betting on satellite connectivity and advanced health tracking to drive demand.
MediaTek Modems to Replace Intel in Future Models
In another shift, some 2025 Apple Watch models will reportedly switch from Intel modems to MediaTek chips, marking the first time Apple has sourced a major component from the Taiwanese semiconductor firm. The new modems will support 5G RedCap, a power-efficient 5G variant optimized for wearables and IoT devices.
Apple has yet to confirm these details, but if accurate, the Ultra 3 could mark a significant leap in both connectivity and health monitoring for smartwatches.
