In celebration of its 270th year, Swiss luxury watchmaker Vacheron Constantin has reintroduced the Historiques 222 in stainless steel—a faithful yet refined homage to the original 1977 model. The re-edition, nicknamed “Jumbo,” blends vintage charm with contemporary horological advancements, reinforcing the brand’s legacy of innovation.
A Nod to History with Modern Precision
The Historiques 222 first debuted in 1977 to commemorate Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary. Designed by Jorg Hysek, the original model broke new ground as the brand’s first integrated bracelet sports watch. Nearly five decades later, the stainless steel reissue retains the sleek, 37mm case (7.95mm thick) but enhances it with modern mechanics, including the in-house calibre 2455/2 movement.
Crafted in 22K 3N yellow gold, the self-winding movement features a dedicated oscillating weight engraved with the original 222 logo and a fluted bezel motif. Though slightly slimmer (3.6mm thick) than its predecessor, the calibre maintains a 40-hour power reserve and improves accuracy with a 4 Hz frequency (28,800 vibrations per hour).
Subtle Design Refinements
The dial showcases thoughtful updates: a repositioned date window for better balance, a vintage-style “AUTOMATIC” inscription, and Super-LumiNova-coated hands and hour-markers for enhanced legibility. The bracelet—now secured with a triple-blade clasp—boasts redesigned joints for a sleeker profile and improved wearability.
Alexandra Vogler, Vacheron Constantin’s Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized the model’s significance: “The 222 is a legendary timepiece cherished by collectors. This stainless steel iteration is the next logical step in its evolution, blending heritage with modernity.”
Exclusive Availability and Future Releases
Priced at CHF 32,000 (approximately AUD$56,500), the Historiques 222 will be available exclusively through Vacheron Constantin boutiques. The launch kicks off a year of anniversary releases, with Vogler hinting at more historical-inspired models to come.
“By starting with this iconic piece—vintage yet contemporary—we’re bridging past and present,” she said. “The celebrations have only just begun.”
The stainless steel edition follows the 2022 yellow gold release, which garnered acclaim among collectors and celebrities alike. With its refined craftsmanship and timeless appeal, the Historiques 222 reaffirms Vacheron Constantin’s mastery of horological artistry.
