Renowned Apple analyst Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple’s upcoming software updates—iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, tvOS 19, and watchOS 12—will feature a fresh design language emphasizing translucency and a sleek, glass-like aesthetic. This cohesive visual overhaul is expected to draw inspiration from visionOS, the operating system for Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which itself will receive subtle design refinements in its upcoming version 3.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman noted that watchOS 12 will also adopt these new design principles, aiming to modernize the Apple Watch interface with a cleaner, more refined look. Although specific details about watchOS 12’s design changes remain scarce, the update is expected to bring improved visual consistency with Apple’s broader software ecosystem while enhancing usability on the smaller screen.
Apple’s goal is to create a more consistent and unified appearance across its ecosystem, particularly focusing on bridging the gap between macOS and iPadOS. iPadOS 19 is anticipated to enhance multitasking and productivity features, further aligning the iPad experience with that of the Mac. Additionally, insider reports suggest the introduction of a macOS-style menu bar on iPads when paired with a Magic Keyboard.
The redesign effort for iOS 19 carries the internal codename “Solarium,” referencing a sunlit glass room—a fitting metaphor for the new translucent menus and buttons slated to appear throughout the software updates. Apple is expected to officially unveil these changes during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, scheduled to kick off on June 9.
Despite the current hype surrounding artificial intelligence, Gurman believes that this comprehensive software redesign will be the true centerpiece of this year’s WWDC, marking a significant evolution in Apple’s user interface design philosophy.
