Apple Watch’s Braided Solo Loop Solves a Longstanding Annoyance

by jingji41

For many people, wearing a watch while working at a desk is an exercise in frustration. The constant clacking of metal clasps against laptop palm rests or wooden surfaces is not just irritating—it’s distracting. Over time, this discomfort often leads to abandoning the watch altogether, defeating the purpose of owning a smartwatch designed for continuous wear.

This was a familiar cycle for me. Despite multiple attempts to integrate an Apple Watch into my daily routine, the rigid or bulky bands always drove me to take it off while typing, only to forget to put it back on later. That changed when I tried the Braided Solo Loop.

A Game-Changing Design

Introduced in 2020 with the Apple Watch Series 6, the Braided Solo Loop (affectionately dubbed “BSL”) replaces the traditional two-part strap with a single stretchy band made of woven yarn. Unlike conventional bands, it lies flat against the wrist, eliminating the annoying tapping and scratching that comes with desk work.

Since switching to the BSL with my new Apple Watch Series 8, I’ve experienced a significant difference. The band is thin, soft, and unobtrusive, allowing me to wear the watch all day without discomfort. For the first time, I’m actually using the device as intended—keeping it on continuously to track health metrics rather than removing it at every inconvenience.

Getting the Right Fit

One key consideration with the BSL is sizing. Unlike adjustable bands, it comes in specific sizes, requiring either an in-store fitting or using Apple’s printable sizing guide. Initially measured as a size 9, I was advised by an Apple Store employee to size down to an 8 for a snugger fit. After a brief adjustment period (including a faint woven imprint on my wrist), the band now sits comfortably without slipping.

Trade-Offs and Alternatives

At $99, the BSL isn’t cheap. Apple offers a more affordable Solo Loop in liquid silicone for half the price, but its glossy finish may not appeal to everyone. Some users also report that stretch bands can loosen over time, raising concerns about longevity. Additionally, the braided material is prone to absorbing sweat and moisture, meaning occasional hand-washing is necessary.

For budget-conscious buyers, third-party options exist. Brands like Palmetto and Etsy seller SDVL offer similar stretch bands at a fraction of Apple’s price. While I may experiment with these alternatives eventually, the BSL has already convinced me: once you go stretchy, there’s no going back.

The Verdict

Despite minor drawbacks, the Braided Solo Loop has transformed my Apple Watch experience. No longer an obstacle during work, the watch now stays on my wrist—where it belongs. While battery life remains a separate challenge, the right band has finally made continuous wear a reality.
