For years, the Breitling Superocean Heritage has been celebrated as one of the most visually striking dive watches since its debut in 2007. However, its imposing dimensions—ranging from 46mm to 42mm in width and over 14mm in thickness—made it unwieldy for many wrists. Now, Breitling is addressing this long-standing critique by introducing more wearable 40mm and 36mm versions while phasing out the largest 46mm model.
This marks the first significant refresh of the collection since 2017 and arguably the most transformative update in its history. Despite the changes, Breitling has meticulously preserved the design DNA inherited from its 1950s dive watches, ensuring the Superocean Heritage retains its vintage-inspired charm.
Subtle Refinements Enhance a Classic Design
At first glance, the new Superocean Heritage remains unmistakably true to its lineage. However, a closer look reveals thoughtful refinements that elevate its mid-century aesthetic. The dial now features a single bisected circle hour marker at twelve o’clock—a nod to the 1957 models—while the hands blend elements from previous generations. The minute hand retains its sword shape, while the hour hand adopts a diamond tip with added depth.
One notable improvement is the addition of a luminescent dot to the seconds hand, addressing a puzzling omission since 2007. The minute track has been subdivided for greater precision, and the hour markers now sport a sleek spear-tip design. The bezel remains unchanged, but the crown has been redesigned with a stronger 1950s influence.
A More Wearable, Versatile Collection
The updated Superocean Heritage introduces new color options, including a sophisticated dark green for the 44mm, 42mm, and 40mm models and a vibrant sea foam green exclusive to the 36mm version. The two-tone bezel and dial combinations have been discontinued, replaced by a luxurious 18-karat rose gold accent option available on select models.
Breitling’s signature flat-end mesh bracelet has also been refined, with end links now seamlessly integrating into the case. Under the hood, the three largest models are powered by the new Caliber B31 automatic movement, boasting a 72-hour power reserve.
A Surfer’s Touch and Chronograph Evolution
In a first for the collection, Breitling has partnered with legendary surfer Kelly Slater to launch a special 40mm edition featuring a tonal blue floral print dial, complete with matching flip-flops.
The chronograph version has also been streamlined, now featuring two sub-dials instead of three, with a single 30-minute totalizer at three o’clock.
