After a prolonged silence from Apple, new leaks indicate the third-generation Apple Watch SE may arrive in late 2025 with two fresh size options. The budget-friendly smartwatch, last updated in 2022, could see its first major redesign since its 2020 debut.
Display industry analyst Ross Young, known for his accurate supply chain insights, recently revealed that production has begun on two new Apple Watch SE screens. According to his subscriber-only tweet, the panels measure approximately 1.6 and 1.8 inches diagonally—a departure from Apple’s traditional case-height specifications.
While exact comparisons remain challenging due to Apple’s unconventional sizing method, experts suggest the new models will likely shift from the Series 6’s 40mm and 44mm casings to the Series 7’s 41mm and 45mm dimensions. This change would align with Apple’s gradual trend toward slightly larger displays across its product lineup.
Speculation continues regarding potential design changes, including a rumored plastic chassis that could reduce manufacturing costs. However, conflicting reports have cast doubt on this feature. Industry watchers anticipate other possible upgrades, such as an always-on display, a newer processor, and the addition of health sensors like temperature or ECG monitoring.
The new leaks come as welcome news for budget-conscious consumers, following Apple’s recent discontinuation of the iPhone SE line in favor of the pricier iPhone 16e. While some analysts predicted Apple might exit the affordable smartwatch market altogether, these developments suggest the company remains committed to its value-oriented wearable—though a rebranding to “Apple Watch 11e” remains possible.
If Apple maintains its traditional release schedule, the updated SE model could debut alongside the Apple Watch Series 11 and iPhone 17 this September. The Ultra line, which has followed a biennial update pattern, might see its next iteration in 2026.
