In Guy Ritchie’s latest exploration of the London underworld, MobLand, luxury watches play a subtle but significant role in defining character identities and social standings. Costume designer Rebecca Hale, known for her work on Fate: The Winx Saga and Absolutely Fabulous, meticulously selected timepieces that enrich the storytelling, conveying personality and background without distracting from the narrative.
Helen Mirren’s character, Maeve Harrigan, wears an Omega Constellation featuring a 28mm case crafted from 18-carat yellow gold and stainless steel. The watch’s white mother-of-pearl dial, gold hands, and signature bezel “claws” evoke understated affluence, perfectly complementing Maeve’s otherwise understated, all-black wardrobe. “She wears a nice watch, but that is the only piece of clothing really that gives any indication that she’s wearing very expensive clothes,” Hale remarks, emphasizing the watch as a subtle marker of wealth.
Maeve’s husband, Conrad Harrigan, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, sports an Omega Constellation Globemaster in rose “Sedna” gold, paired with a brown leather strap. The Globemaster’s fluted bezel and classic design suit a character rooted in legacy but conscious of his diminishing influence—an aging figure of authority whose style hints at tradition and refinement, even if Omega markets the watch differently.
Paddy Considine’s Kevin Harrigan opts for a Hublot Classic Fusion Titanium Chronograph. With its 42mm titanium case, HUB1153 self-winding movement, and black rubber strap, this watch combines modernity, durability, and functionality—apt for a character who works diligently behind the scenes rather than seeking the spotlight.
Meanwhile, Tom Hardy’s fixer, Harry Da Souza, wears a solid yellow gold Rolex GMT-Master II (ref. 116718LN-0001) on an Oyster bracelet. Its black ceramic bezel and dual time zone capabilities underscore robustness and versatility, signaling seniority amid an otherwise minimalist wardrobe.
“The watches tell a story,” Hale explains. “Conrad, Maeve and Tom [Hardy] have gone for absolute classics.”
Through these carefully curated luxury timepieces, MobLand enriches its characters’ narratives, using style as a nuanced language that speaks volumes about their place within the shadowy hierarchy of London’s criminal world.
